Interpretation Centre: an introduction before the cave

Your visit begins at the interpretation centre located at the entrance of the Mas d’Azil Cave. This modern space introduces the lives of the site’s first inhabitants and presents prehistoric animals such as the cave bear. Interactive 3D models explain the cave’s geological formation, while exhibits explore the Aurignacian, Magdalenian and Azilian cultures. A replica of an inaccessible decorated gallery completes the experience, alongside presentations of early excavations and key historical events such as Richelieu’s siege.

Guided tour of the cave: a monumental site

Continue with a one hour guided tour through the vast chambers of the Mas d’Azil Cave, listed as a Historic Monument. Admire impressive geological formations, a unique underground river and even a road crossing the cave. The guide explains major archaeological discoveries, including remains of mammoths and rhinoceroses, and highlights the significance of the site, which gave its name to the Azilian culture. The tour also reveals traces of prehistoric occupations and artworks located in now inaccessible areas.

Prehistory Museum: a collection of masterpieces

Located 1.5 km from the cave, the Mas d’Azil Prehistory Museum completes the experience with a remarkable collection of artefacts. Tools, weapons, decorated objects, painted pebbles, ornaments and carved pieces showcase prehistoric craftsmanship. The museum also displays the reproduction of the famous “fawn with birds” spear thrower and the 13,000 year old skull of a young Homo sapiens nicknamed “Magda”. Visitors can also admire detailed reproductions of the decorated galleries inaccessible today.
