The Abbey of Caunes-Minervois: Where History Meets Heritage

During the Albigensian Crusade, the abbot of Caunes welcomes papal envoys who come to preach and defend the Catholic faith. In 1227, Pierre Isarn, Cathar bishop of the Carcassès, is burned at the stake in Caunes, marking a pivotal moment in the region’s history.

The Incarnate Red Marble: A Signature of Caunes

From the 14th century onward, red “incarnate” marble from the local quarry adorns the side chapels of the nave, later vaulted in brick in 1770. Large south-facing Gothic windows bathe the church in light, while the apse features 18th-century stained glass and wooden choir stalls. A marble altarpiece honors the martyrs of Caunes. Abbot Jean d’Alibert restores the buildings and rebuilds the abbatial residence.

Cloister and Convent Buildings Steeped in History

In the 17th century, the Congregation of Saint-Maur erects the present cloister on medieval foundations. The main convent buildings now host permanent and temporary exhibitions. In the crypt, open to the public, visitors discover remains of the first Carolingian church.

Extend the visit through the village, where façades span from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. Admire the Renaissance Hôtel d’Alibert, stroll to the chapel of Notre-Dame du Cros, and visit the Carrière du Roy quarry, source of the Caunes marble used at the Trianon in Versailles and the Paris Opera.
