A Cathar castle full of history

Perched on the mountainside, Saissac Castle dominates Montagne Noire and offers breathtaking views of the Pyrenees. Its schist and granite buildings stretch across three terraces, illustrating the evolution from a medieval fortress to a 16th-century artillery stronghold.

Meet the Cathars and the kings

The castle’s history dates back to 960 when it was bequeathed by the bishop of Toulouse to the counts of Carcassonne. On the eve of the Albigensian Crusade, Bertrand de Saissac became guardian of young Raymond Roger Trencavel. The coin treasure, with 2,000 deniers from the 13th century, reflects Capetian control over Languedoc.

Remains and royal treasure

Explore the keep, square towers and curtain walls from the 13th century, as well as Renaissance modifications by the Bernuy family. The restored main building houses the royal medieval treasure exhibition, one of the oldest found in Occitanie.

For ages 8-13, a discovery game makes the visit fun and educational. Extend your experience with a walk through the fortified village: remains of the walls, medieval gates, defensive towers, the béal canal and the Old Trades Museum.
