Dedicated to the Tautavel Man, this unique museum in Europe retraces the history of humanity, from the first Europeans to the dawn of History. Rich collections, immersive displays, and fun workshops immerse young and old alike in the daily life of our ancestors. A captivating visit to share.
In 1971, the discovery of the Tautavel Man (450,000 years old) by Professor de Lumley’s team marked a turning point and led to the creation of a true scientific and cultural center. Since then, the Caune de l’Arago cave in Tautavel has become a key site in world prehistory.
With more than 150 human remains unearthed – including, in 2018, an exceptional milk tooth dated between 560,000 and 580,000 years old – the cave represents the oldest human evidence ever discovered in France. The Tautavel Museum of Prehistory offers the unique opportunity to meet these first humans and place their story within the broader context of European prehistory.
Beyond the richness of its collections, the museum captivates visitors with numerous fun and cultural activities. Workshops, experiments, and reconstructions immerse young and old alike in the daily life of their distant ancestors. A vibrant, hands-on experience that makes the museum an ideal family outing.
Throughout the year, a varied program of events, exhibitions, and encounters enriches the visitor experience and places them at the heart of the action. The detailed program is available on the museum’s official website.
