Book onlineGuided tour of the Bastide Saint-Louis, the jewel of Carcassonne's historic centre
Explore the Bastide Saint-Louis, founded in the 13th century by Saint Louis, and discover the authentic face of today's city centre. Admire its 17th-century mansions, witnesses to the golden age of the cloth industry, as well as its must-see monuments: Saint-Michel Cathedral, Saint-Vincent Church, Place Carnot and the covered market halls.
Tour limited to 30 participants.
Your visit begins in front of the Museum of Fine Arts, before admiring the elegant Murat mansion with its wrought-iron balconies and majestic pediment. Here, the story of Carcassonne’s private mansions comes alive through refined architecture and timeless heritage.
The tour continues to the Jacobins Gate, the last remaining vestige of the four original entrances to the Bastide. You then step into Saint-Michel Cathedral, built in 1247 under the reign of Louis IX, where soaring vaults and gothic details immerse you in medieval history.
You pass under the 17th-century covered market, once the city’s grain trading hub, before reaching Place Carnot. Here, the old pillory site still whispers of past traditions, narrated vividly by your guide.
The visit concludes at the Canal du Midi harbor, inaugurated in 1810 and today listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s the perfect spot to round off the experience, with the option to extend your day with a boat ride or leisurely stroll along the water.
The itinerary may vary depending on the guide.
As Bastide Saint-Louis is less well known than the medieval city, this tour offers a complementary and original view of Carcassonne.
A trip along the Canal du Midi is the perfect way to extend the experience with a boat ride.
This tour complements the tour of the Cité de Carcassonne, offering a mix of styles, from the Middle Ages to classicism.
