• A strategic refuge: Before becoming a royal stronghold, the site served as a place of refuge for local people and lords allied with the Cathars. Its position atop a steep rocky outcrop made it virtually impossible to besiege, providing a safe haven during the height of the Crusades.

Long regarded as an impregnable refuge for the Cathars during the Albigensian Crusade, it was nevertheless never taken by force! Today, its crenellated curtain walls and watchtowers still bear witness to four centuries of border tensions. As you wander through its defensive chicanes, you will be transported to the heart of an epic tale where the stone tells of resistance and royal power.
